Pink Eye (Infections Conjunctivitis)
Conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the transparent membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the white of the eyeball. When the blood vessels in this membrane are inflamed, it causes the eye to appear pink or red in color, ergo the condition’s colloquial name– pink eye. Conjunctivitis can be infectious (caused by a bacteria, viruses, or fungi) or noninfectious (caused by allergies, foreign bodies, or chemicals). It’s important to receive a proper evaluation in order to get the right treatment.
Pink eye is a type of infectious conjunctivitis. It is extremely contagious, and outbreaks rapidly sweep through schools and playgrounds.
