Paxlovid Oral COVID-19 Antiviral Medication
Jovive Health in Chicago’s South Loop brings you the latest treatments for COVID-19. We now offer Pfizer Paxlovid, an antiviral pill to help treat COVID-19. In clinical trials, it has been shown to be 89% effective in reducing the risk of death and hospitalization.
Here are answers to some commonly asked questions about this medication.
How does it work?
This antiviral therapy has two separate medications. The three-pill dose consists of two pills of nirmatrelvir, which helps to inhibit the SARS-CoV-2 protein from replicating. The third pill is ritonavir, which helps to boost levels of antiviral medicines.
When is the right time to take it?
For Paxlovid to be effective, you must take it within five days of developing symptoms. As with any antiviral medication, it works best the earlier you use it. Once you wait past a week, most of the damage is done and the antiviral medication loses effectiveness.
How much do I have to take?
The dosage for Paxlovid is three pills twice a day for five days. It is packaged in a “dose card” to help you keep track.
Are Paxlovid and Tamiflu similar?
Both are antiviral medications that help reduce symptoms early in the illness. They are, however, different, as they treat two different types of disease.
How do you get a Paxlovid prescription?
When you visit Jovive Health, your provider will help determine if this is the right treatment for you and your illness. It is FDA authorized for people 12 and older with a positive COVID-19 test who weigh at least 88 pounds. Ask your physician if this is an option for you.

How well does it work?

What are the side effects?
Most side effects are mild, and many people will not experience serious effects.
Most common are:
Altered or impaired sense of taste
Diarrhea
Increased blood pressure
Muscle aches
